Welcome to the Vincent Airman Leadership School (ALS). ALS is your first experience with Professional Military Education, a milestone in your Air Force career. This course will challenge you to discover the duties, responsibilities, and skills you must practice to become a successful Air Force supervisor and leader.

Course Curriculum

The Airman Leadership School (ALS) curriculum is broken down into five units of instruction that focus on providing Senior Airmen and Staff Sergeants with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to succeed as supervisors in the military environment: Leadership Skills, Supervisory Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Communication Skills, and Military Studies.

Commandant, MSgt Erin Smith

Commandant’s Welcome

Congratulations on your selection to attend Airman Leadership School! Your selection indicates you have earned the trust and respect of your commander and supervisors, and that you are ready for increased responsibility. You are about to embark on a 5-week journey that will focus on preparing you for these responsibilities as a leader and growing you as an individual.

The ALS curriculum is designed to prepare you for official supervisor/rater duties in the Air Force. It is very demanding and will occupy most of your time. You will need to mentally prepare yourself for the increased workload that includes heavy reading and homework assignments. You may also have class obligations or activities that require your time outside of duty hours, to include weekends.

Be prepared for the most rewarding training experience in your Air Force career. Come with a good attitude, an open mind, and a willingness to learn, not only the curriculum, but about yourself. The team and I will do all we can to make this an enjoyable experience and are so excited to be part of your journey!

You must bring:

    • Current, signed, and Commandant approved PT profiles, no exceptions.
    • Proof of current and passing PT Test through course end date.
    • Personal or government computer. If using an Apple computer, please bring adapters.  CAC readers or CAC enabled computers are MANDATORY.

On DOE 1 you will be required to have/wear all three of the following uniforms: AF PTU (cannot mix old and new PTU pieces), Service Dress Blues (Class As), and OCPs (NO flight suits or fire-retardant uniforms authorized).

All student material will be issued electronically. Please bring a laptop, tablet, or any electronic reader. Cell phones will not be used to store lesson material.

All students MUST have access to Adobe Acrobat, Word, and PowerPoint to be able to successfully complete student assignments.

All uniforms must be in compliance with AFI 36-2903.  Uniforms must be maintained, clean, and in serviceable condition (not frayed, worn out, torn, faded, patched, etc.), correct in design and specifications, and fit correctly. For OCPs, fire-retardant OCPs (except for AFSCs outlined in the AFI) and ALL flight suits are unauthorized for wear during the course. Effective 1 May 2024, any student arriving with a uniform that does not meet these requirements will be returned to their owning unit.

Required:

    • Service dress is required for this course, with full accoutrements, to include occupational badges.
    • Airborne members must bring standard low quarters if wearing their dress boots for the blues inspection.
    • OCPs are the primary uniforms of the day- students should have at least two AFI compliant sets.
    • Seasonally appropriate Air Force PT Gear. Students on maternity profiles should abide by AFI 36-2903, section 6.6. for what to wear, and may not wear spandex shorts or leggings.

Please ensure all additional accessory items follow AFI 36-2903, including gym bags, backpacks, handbags, eyewear, and hair accessories.

Physical Training will be conducted as a class throughout the week and students are required to wear official Air Force PT gear. PT session information will be given at the start of each class. All students are required to perform to the best of their abilities during PT sessions.

    • Profiles and Waivers: If students are on a profile/waiver, notify flight room instructors and bring a current and signed profile on DOE 1. Profiles issued within 60 days of course start and/or fully exempt require prior Commandant approval through the unit First Sergeant.

Due to the fast-paced nature of the course, appointments are generally not allowed while in attendance at the Airman Leadership School. Provide any potential appointment information to the primary instructor on DOE 1- at their discretion or based on course work that day, some appointments may have to be rescheduled or canceled. If further information is required, please contact the schoolhouse at (850) 884-4067.

Cell phone usage during class time is prohibited. Cell phone usage is allowed during break time only, so please plan accordingly.

Graduation will be a formal evening event at the Soundside Club. The cost per person is $35. Students are required to invite their Squadron Leadership Triad (Commander, SEL, and First Sergeant) and will also be allowed to bring three personal guests.

During ALS, students are required to participate in at least one volunteer project. The project will be during the weekend or after class hours and will be determined by the student volunteer team. Plan accordingly to attend.

Students have a designated parking lot, across the crosswalk in front of/to the west of the Airman Leadership School entrance. Students are not authorized to park behind/to the east of the building, in the Education Center parking lot.

Profiles issued within 60 days of course start date and/or fully exempt members may not attend Vincent ALS. Any deviations from this policy should be routed from the unit First Sergeant to the ALS Commandant, NLT 2 weeks prior to course start date, for approval in writing. Permanent profiles and maternity profiles are authorized to attend IAW AF regulation.

NOTE: Students with fitness assessments that expire during class, uncoordinated profiles, or uncoordinated changes to their profiles will be returned to their owning unit.
